How to ship a handbag or purse so it keeps its shape
A handbag that arrives flattened, creased, or scratched turns into a return, even if nothing broke. Here's how to pack a bag so it comes out of the box looking the way it did in your photos.
- Stuff it, don't fold it. Fill the bag with tissue or packing paper so it holds its shape. Never fold a structured leather bag.
- Protect the hardware. Wrap metal clasps, feet, and zipper pulls in tissue so they can't scratch the leather.
- Structured bag = box. Soft bag = mailer is fine. Slouchy fabric and canvas bags can go in a poly mailer. Leather and structured bags need a box.
- Use the dust bag if you have one. Buyers notice, and it keeps the bag clean.
Handbags and purses are some of the best sellers on Poshmark, eBay, Mercari, and Depop, from thrifted crossbody bags to designer totes. Nothing in a handbag is fragile the way glass is, so it's tempting to fold it into a mailer and move on. But a crushed shape, a creased leather flap, or a scratch from its own buckle is enough for a buyer to open a return.
The fix takes about five minutes and a few sheets of tissue.
Box or mailer? It depends on the bag
| Type of bag | Ship it in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas or fabric tote, nylon bag, slouchy hobo | Poly or bubble mailer | No structure to crush. Fold loosely around tissue. |
| Wallet, small clutch, wristlet | Bubble mailer or small box | Small and flat. Use a box if it has hard corners or a metal frame. |
| Structured leather bag, satchel, top-handle bag | Box | Holds its shape only if nothing presses on it. |
| Designer or high-value bag | Box, in its dust bag | Presentation matters, and you want the strongest packaging if a claim comes up. |
How to pack a handbag

Step 1. Stuff the bag with tissue so it holds its shape.

Step 2. Wrap the hardware so it can't scratch.

Step 3. Slide it into a dust bag.

Step 4. Stand it upright in a box and fill the gaps.
- 1Tissue inside the bag. Fills it out so the sides can't cave in or crease.
- 2A dust bag or a soft wrap. Keeps the leather clean and scuff-free.
- 3A box with padding on every side. The bag stands upright and doesn't touch the walls.
- Empty and photograph it. Check every pocket, then photograph the corners, handles, hardware, and any serial number or date code. That's your proof of condition.
- Stuff it. Fill the inside with crumpled tissue until the bag holds its natural shape. Firm, not bulging.
- Protect the hardware. Wrap tissue around metal clasps, buckles, feet, and zipper pulls. Tuck a strip of tissue between a flap and the body of the bag.
- Handle the strap. Detach a removable strap, coil it, wrap it in tissue, and tuck it inside or beside the bag. Leave fixed handles upright with tissue under them so they don't get a crease.
- Dust bag it. Slide it into its dust bag. No dust bag? Wrap it in a sheet of tissue or a clean plastic bag.
- Box it. Pad the bottom, stand the bag upright, and fill around it until it can't shift. Nothing heavy on top.
Don't oversize the box. Bags are light, so a big box mostly adds air. On a large box, carriers can bill you by box size instead of weight. Pick the smallest box that leaves about an inch of padding on each side.
What size box to use for a handbag
| Bag size | Box to look for |
|---|---|
| Wallet, card case, wristlet | 9 x 6 x 3 in, or a #2 bubble mailer for soft styles. |
| Crossbody, small shoulder bag | 10 x 8 x 4 in or 12 x 9 x 4 in. |
| Standard shoulder bag, satchel | 14 x 10 x 6 in. |
| Large tote, weekender | 18 x 14 x 8 in. Above 1 cubic foot, so check the price before you buy the label. |
Measure the stuffed bag and the BoxSizeFit calculator will find the smallest box or mailer that fits.
Common handbag shipping mistakes
- Folding a leather bag to fit a mailer. Leather keeps the crease.
- Shipping it empty. An unstuffed bag caves in the moment the box gets bumped.
- Leaving hardware bare. Metal on leather is how scratches happen.
- Using newspaper inside. Ink can rub off on a light lining.
- Forgetting the strap or dust bag that was in your listing photos.
Supplies checklist
- Acid-free tissue paper
- Dust bags
- Medium shipping boxes (14 x 10 x 6 in)

Can I ship a purse in a poly mailer?
A soft, slouchy bag like a canvas tote, nylon crossbody, or fabric clutch can go in a poly mailer, folded loosely around tissue. A structured leather bag shouldn't, because a mailer lets it get crushed and creased. Use a box for those.
What do I stuff a purse with for shipping?
Acid-free tissue paper or plain white packing paper. Avoid newspaper, which can leave ink on light linings, and avoid stuffing it so tight that the seams strain.
What size box do I need for a handbag?
Most shoulder bags fit a 14 x 10 x 6 inch box. Small crossbody bags fit 10 x 8 x 4, and large totes need something like 18 x 14 x 8. Measure the stuffed bag and add about an inch on each side for padding.
Should I lay the handbag flat or stand it up?
Stand it upright, the way it sits on a shelf, with the handles up and tissue under them. Laying a structured bag flat lets the weight of the box press on its sides.
How do I keep a designer bag safe in shipping?
Photograph the serial number, date code, hardware, and every corner before packing, add tracking and signature confirmation for higher-value bags, and pack it in a box inside its dust bag. If your marketplace authenticates bags, the bag will be opened and repacked, so pack it neatly enough to be re-packed.
