How to ship makeup without cracked powder or leaks

Makeup is half fragile and half rule-bound. Pressed powders shatter, liquids leak, and a few everyday items like nail polish and dry shampoo can't fly. Here's how to handle all of it.

quick answer

Makeup and skincare sell steadily on Poshmark, Mercari, eBay, and Depop, from unopened palettes to bundles of new-in-box products. The two things that go wrong are physical: pressed powder that arrives as loose dust, and liquids that leak over everything else in the box. The third is a rule a lot of sellers don't know: a few beauty products are hazardous materials and can only travel by ground.

Which makeup has shipping rules?

ProductAny USPS service?Notes
Lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, pencilsYesNo restrictions. Mailer is fine.
Pressed powder, blush, eyeshadow palettesYesFragile, not restricted. Pad the powder and use a box.
Foundation, creams, skincareYes, usuallyBag it in case it leaks. If the label says flammable, ship by ground.
Nail polish, nail polish removerGround onlyFlammable liquid. Ground Advantage, declared as hazmat.
Perfume, body mist, alcohol setting sprayGround onlyFlammable. See our perfume shipping guide.
Aerosols: dry shampoo, hairspray, spray sunscreenGround onlyNeeds the Limited Quantity marking. No international.

The detailed limits for flammable liquids and aerosols are in USPS Publication 52. For ground-only items, choose USPS Ground Advantage and answer yes when your label tool asks about hazardous materials.

Bundles count too. One bottle of nail polish in a bundle of lipsticks makes the whole box ground-only. Either ship it separately, or send the entire bundle by Ground Advantage and declare it. Undeclared hazmat can bring a $50 USPS fee on commercial labels.

  1. 1A cotton pad between powder and lid. The single best way to stop pressed powder from cracking.
  2. 2Liquids taped and bagged. If it leaks, it stays in the bag.
  3. 3A small box with padding. No room for anything to rattle.
Powders padded, liquids sealed, and everything snug in the box.
  1. Photograph everything. Show each item, any shade names, and whether it's sealed or swatched.
  2. Pad the powders. Press a cotton round or folded tissue onto the powder, close the compact or palette, and put a strip of tape around it so it can't pop open.
  3. Seal the liquids. Tighten caps, tape them, and put each bottle in a zip-top bag. Glass bottles also get a layer of bubble wrap.
  4. Wrap each piece. Bubble wrap around compacts, palettes, and glass. Lipsticks and pencils can be bundled together with a rubber band.
  5. Box it snugly. Pad the bottom, pack palettes flat and bottles upright, and fill every gap. Shake test before you tape.
  6. Pick the right service. If anything inside is ground-only, the whole package goes USPS Ground Advantage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ship pressed powder without it breaking?

Put a cotton round or a folded piece of tissue between the powder and the lid, close it, and tape it shut. The pad stops the powder from bouncing against the lid. Then wrap the compact in bubble wrap and ship it in a box, not a thin mailer.

Can you ship nail polish through USPS?

Yes, within the US by ground only. Nail polish and nail polish remover are flammable liquids, so they go USPS Ground Advantage, declared as hazmat. They can't go Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Flat Rate, or international.

Can I ship dry shampoo or hairspray?

Aerosol cans can go within the US by ground only, with the Limited Quantity marking USPS requires. Aerosols can't be shipped internationally through USPS.

Can I ship lipstick in a bubble mailer?

Yes. Lipstick, lip liner, mascara, eyeliner, and other solid items in plastic tubes are fine in a bubble mailer, though a small box is safer in hot weather or for a large bundle.

How do I know if a makeup item has shipping restrictions?

Check the label. If it says flammable, contains alcohol as a main ingredient, or comes in a pressurized can, treat it as hazmat and ship it by ground. Powders, creams, and solid products usually have no restrictions.
